So I’ve been trying to do this thing. Maybe you’ve heard of it. It’s called “SPEAKING IT INTO EXISTENCE”. Not too long ago, I blogged about wanting to do something for Watts Power House Church, a church in Watts, dead center in the middle of the projects, my home church volunteers at once a month. I wanted to give back to the women after being inspired by the back-to-school backpack drive the church did for the kiddos. I mean, I knew I wanted to do it but I also wasn’t entirely sure if I could pull it off.
As time crept, I decided I was just going to go for it. I didn’t necessarily have a plan in place but I text blasted friends to see if they wanted to donate product for my little project. Fast forward two months to October, my birthday month. I was having difficulty figuring how to celebrate. I feel as though the ages of 26-29, it’s kind of like… what the heck do you do because there’s nothing sexy about those numbers. To me, they’re jumbled years – at least in celebration terms. No one really cares. 26 sounds like 27 sounds like 28. (26 on have actually been my favorite years in life thus far, I’m speaking solely upon celebrating the number). Anyway, then it dawned on me. I abound theme by 28th as a giveback to the community. Then it dawned on me part 2 that I could speak into existence my beauty product donation project I’ve been wanting to do for the women of Watts Power House! WOW, how the stars began aligning, so great, love it.
So that’s exactly what I did. I figured out a pretty flawless system if I’d say so myself in how it would run the giveback day-of and pulled it off pretty much seamlessly. It really was close to perfect. The only thing that I wish I had more of was gathering items for the younger girls to have. Even though this was tailored towards the later high school and on, there was enough ‘adolescent’ items left over for the younger gals to pick from. So it’s not that I was really flawed in that aspect but I guess moving forward, I should think in the more grand scheme of things age group wise. I’m definitely not trying to toot my own horn here. I am just simply stating that if you want to do something, just do it. You’ve got nothing to lose. You will be surprised at your capabilities to pull it off something great in such little time. Not only that, but it will fuel more confidence and excitement for your next endeavor!
The church absolutely loved it and the Rock Harbor volunteers loved it too. We are all created in God’s image and I definitely think society creates pockets of separation and tells us that we are indeed different, when in the church and under God, not one of us is really better than the other. I wanted to do this not because it was a charitable act but because I wanted to make these women feel special. Kids get a lot of attention but women and moms often get overlooked. In addition, the folks in these neighborhoods don’t necessarily have the means to name-brand, expensive beauty products, and so why not shower them with the best of the best!
It was the best birthday I could have ever asked for. I had my best friends come and help out which was a great way to get them to come to church as well as give their time to a greater cause. I wish I had taken more photos but HERE is the link to my IGTV video I created that recaps the entire thing!
I encourage you to do something that makes you step out your comfort zone! Or if you’re not there yet, at least set aside some time once a month or once every other month to give back to your community whether it be reading to seniors at a senior citizen home, volunteering a a local shelter or soup kitchen, etc etc.
YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE IT. Guaranteed, you will be more positively affect that those you help.
